Hello, my name is AJ Davey, and I’m 19 years old. I was born in Vancouver, but after six months, my family moved to beautiful city called Calgary. As a young boy, I always loved running businesses. Whether it was a lemonade stand outside my house or selling slime at school, I was fascinated by the idea of creating something of my own. My burning desire to build a successful business is what ultimately pushed me to quit my job and go all in on my landscaping business, now known as Checkmate Landscape. However, it didn’t start with that name. Initially, it was called TA Yard Care—"T" for my sister Tessa and "A" for yours truly. That name didn’t last long, though, as my sister and I quickly became busy with work and school.

After a long winter break and plenty of reflection, I decided to fully commit to my landscaping business and stop treating it as just a side hustle, as I had for the past three years. I was determined, but I still needed a name—something with a nice ring to it. During this time, I was hooked on chess and would always shout “Checkmate!” after winning a game. One day, after a victory and my usual declaration, it hit me—why not incorporate “Checkmate” into my company name? And that’s how Checkmate Landscape came to life.  

Our mission is to become Calgary’s largest landscaping and lawn care provider and provide the best services to Calgarians! We aim to achieve this by actively listening to customer feedback, delivering every service with excellence, and ensuring that each customer is completely satisfied with their experience at Checkmate Landscape Co.
